[Shining Visual, SHINee Key]

Q. It must not have been an easy decision to shoot a pictorial in just a week after your military discharge.

K: I worked hard even in the military to show that the military doesn’t change a person. People won’t notice if you are in a good state but they would notice soon if you discharge in a bad state. This is probably my last schedule in October. I want to rest a little actually.

Q. Of course, you would. How was your military life?

K: Health and people are what I got in the military. Being in the military band, I met lots of friends who aren’t celebrities, especially young friends who do music. It’s an opportunity for me to feel what young people nowadays like. It wasn’t easy to get used to it but it was fun.

Q. To idols who have worked continuously, the military could be a time for them to rest, they say. Do you sympathize with that?

K: I don’t think the word rest is the right word but I was able to live a planned life. The time to rest, time to train, and time to sleep are all being set, and the schedule for every day is the same. It’s nice to be able to live while doing something regularly.

Q. It goes without saying about Key on his dance and vocals, you act, does variety shows, musicals, etc. above average. Do you only show those that you identify as those you are good at or did you make a ceaseless effort in them?

K: Other than music, I think it’s being wrapped up well. Even though I can’t show that I am really good at those things that I am really bad at, it was being marketed well. I know how to show as if I am good at it too.

Q. You might have received hate for at least once because of your image of being a bubbly person and someone who is firm in expressing yourself but none of such things happened for the 13 years you have been active.

K: I don’t know about others but there are many failures that only I, myself know of. There are lots of broadcasts where I was not able to stand out and there were times when I talk about something or when I sing don’t work out. I think I learned how to judge after those experiences.

Q. Being a celebrity, everyone is hesitant to show themselves. Key is comparatively someone who shows his own-self naturally well. With that, you are a ‘genius celebrity’ that has lots of talents.

K: I don’t know how will it be if I were to stay still without showing myself. I may not be able to shoot today’s pictorial too. I am someone who has to do a few things at one time. For example, I got to so <Amazing Saturday> after I debuted for 10 years. There would be lots of people who got to see me for the first time or got to show my personality for the first time through that program. But if I don’t do that, times when I don’t show myself, would there be lots of people who are curious about me? That’s not the case. While there are those who people are curious even if they stood still, I don’t think I am like that.

Q. You objectify yourself really harshly/cold though?

K: I got to know that it’s uncomfortable to keep on self-denying. Even though there are people who develop themselves while having an extreme/absolute threshold, I don’t think I belong to that. I would try this way, try that way, and stand still before I came to realize it. I came to realize that, in the end, staying still is not it. The occupation of a celebrity is meaningless if I like it when the people don’t, isn’t it?

Q. What’s the judging standard you have when you have to choose something?

K: In the past, I would do it if I think people will like it even if I don’t like it. However, right now, if I am unsure about it, I won’t do it. I got to know that my life won’t have a huge change just because I make myself do something in an uncertain stage. I don’t know too. I might say it this way right now but I may come to do lots of things that come my way. What I am sure of is that I need something new.

Q. When fans asked about your plans after your discharge in the Open Chat room, you answered ‘Won’t I do anything?’ Are you still not able to find something new?

K: I am considering if I should do Youtube. I have doubt that people are curious about the ‘Off’ side of me that doesn’t appear on the broadcast. It’s not about whether I do or do I not do Youtube but how to do it is important. I am not able to find the answer to whether am I able to do it without feeling embarrassed. When competing with the people who do solely Youtube professionally, I don’t know if my content would have any competitiveness at all. I have been thinking about it for a long time.

Q. We could feel that you and your friends are adoring each other from the conversations you closely had with your fans in the Open Chat room.

K: It took a long time for this time to come, where I can show myself to my fans till my heart contents. Fans have waited that long too. In the past, I focused on showing myself to the public. Even though I look after my fans during those times too but I thought it was more meaningful to show something new to those who are new. Right now, I think if I were to walk straight, people who like me will continue to like me. I think it’s right to show things of high quality to those who waited for me.

Q. You are in your 13th year of debut. To the SHINee members, you probably feel a sense of emotion above being colleagues.

K: Whether likable or not, I think it’s the attachment. Everything is a given, everything is natural. If anyone is to ask how much I love my members, and how close are we, it would be hard for me to answer. It’s just like asking how much I like my mother. They are not my colleagues, friends or family but it’s a relationship that is hard to describe.

Q. An idol said ‘Even though we are young despite our age, it’s sad to be handled like a secondhand. Have you ever had this thought?

K: Of course. However, I do understand why people will think that way. That’s because they have seen us promoted as an idol that much. If that’s the case, the direction needs to be turned around. To something that people can find interesting instead of the same form. In that aspect, Rain and Lee Hyori sunbaenim are extremely cool and amazing. They chose to go with the trend while they sing and dance.

Q. We think Key has the point of view of a content creator rather than an artist.

K: I think there are gradually more things I need to do as an artist. Nowadays, Youtube has been popularized like TV, isn’t it. That’s why I think the direction needs to be changed.

Q. Do you have a side that people don’t know, a side that is unexpected of you?

K: I have a simple side of me but I think people don’t know that. Haha. Even when I talked to my military juniors, I said that as compared to receiving a good present, I like receiving a letter better. I think there’s a burden of needing to buy good things for me. Of course, they might feel that way because I only showed a well-equipped side of me on SNS or on broadcasts but I am really simple.

Q. What is rest to Key?

K: Thinking about nothing. I don’t think about my work when I play or when I sleep. At that moment, that’s resting. I think that the quality of the work we do changes according to how willingly involved you are in it. That’s why it’s of course that you will think about it. When I watch a movie, the role makes me project myself, when I listen to music, I will come to think about how is this song. In the past, I didn’t watch audition survival programs at all. It makes my hands and feet tremble. I just naturally became like that. That’s why there’s no TV in my house. I only choose and watch the programs that I want to watch.

Q. When is the time when you see yourself as someone who is not bad/okay?

K: There are lots of times when I am pleased but the words ‘looking not bad/okay’ makes me think. Haha. Actually, I have a gathering that has been sustained for 10 years now. They would dash over whenever I call, and even when people curse at me, I don’t feel anything as long as they are there. Just by having those friends, wouldn’t that make me a person who isn’t that awful? Actually, I am most apologetic to the people who work with me. No matter how we see it, there’s no way that I can’t say ‘I don’t want' when it comes to working. However, doesn’t it make me a not bad/okay person just being mindful about things like that? Haha.

Q. Just listening to you, you are someone who is extremely simple-minded but also someone who thinks deeply and complicatedly.

K: Being simple-minded is the easiest but also hard. I can’t feel worn out or afraid because I have to give up so many things. I learned about it naturally without any special reason.

Q. Do you not have a sense of burden where SHINee’s Key’s future direction depends on the choice you make right now?

K: I don’t. It’s been a long time since I set a goal. I do the work I am responsible for and if I don’t let people down, I will be able to do other work too. When I was young, I have never thought of becoming the Key I am right now. It’s only that, the people who look favorably on the choices I made have increased as compared to the past so I thought wouldn’t it be that way in the future too.

Q. It feels like something only people who are confident can say.

K: I am scared easily but I have no fear. I do worry if ‘Is this right?’ but when I have to make a decision, I make them firmly. People who fear a lot might avoid but people who get scared easily don’t run away.
